Students at West Colchester Consolidated School gave flight to peace doves in celebration of the International Day of Peace on Thursday, Sept. 21.

The doves were giant puppets created and brought to life by students from West Colchester Consolidated. The doves required three-to-four students to operate, and ‘took flight’ for their performance during a reading of Peace is a Dream Unfolding, a book of poems, quotations, essays, photographs, and artwork related to peace.

The performance was delivered in Veteran’s Memorial Park in Bass River, with West Colchester Consolidated staff and members of the public, including a number of veterans, in attendance.

The event also included prayers from various religions and cultures, and a traditional Mi’kmaq smudging ceremony.

Dr. Karen Ewing, a local physician who played an instrumental role in the creation of Veteran’s Memorial Park, narrated Peace is a Dream Unfolding during the performance.

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21. The General Assembly of the United Nation has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.
