Earlier this month students at Cobequid Consolidated enjoyed an out-of-this-world experience as they explored a giant map; an image taken from the International Space Station. The giant map took up half the gym and was a rare privilege as only ten geography teachers per year have access to these maps.

The Grade 5 students adapted the geography  lessons and led discussions on Canada. Students were amazed at how large Canada is and how small Nova Scotia is in comparison. The map led to a great conversation about similarities and differences across Canada in topography, temperature, transportation, vegetation, etc. All students now have a better appreciation for Terry Fox’s ambitious journey to run across Canada, and some may now have plans to become space explorers!
