Every two weeks, the Grade 8 French Immersion, French Language Arts classes at E.B. Chandler Jr. High receives a visit from Catherine Hirbour, a Francophone from Quebec and her daughter Margot.

Each visit, two students are given the opportunity to work directly with Margot and Catherine reading French children’s stories. Catherine engages with the whole class by reading stories to them in French to model correct pronunciation.

The students participate in a conversation in French with Catherine and Margot, providing them with the opportunity to have an authentic conversation experience with a native French speaker. This experience also allows French Immersion students to gain confidence with pronunciation.

Additionally, the class sings French songs with Margot that they have learned as part of the cultural component of the French Immersion curriculum. During the last visit, they sang “Partons la mer est belle”, a moving song about the dangers of a life of fishing.
