CCRSB students come together to Rally Against Racism
More than 1,000 Chignecto-Central Regional School Board (CCRSB) students marched together today to Rally Against Racism.
The march took place in Truro and included students from Cobequid Educational Centre (CEC), Truro Junior High, Truro Elementary, Central Colchester Junior High, Harmony Heights Elementary and Tatamagouche Elementary. Teachers and staff from the school board, as well as members of the public, joined students in raising awareness about racism, equity, respect and acceptance of the things that make us different.
“The Rally Against Racism is an annual celebration that helps unify our school communities and engage students in conversations about racism from their perspectives,” said Gary Adams, Superintendent and CEO of CCRSB. “The enthusiasm from the students was really encouraging. It was easy to see the passion they have for raising awareness about racism in their communities.”
The Rally Against Racism began at CEC and continued to Victoria Park. Students then addressed the crowd and gave performances inspired by a number of cultures. The reading of an anti-racism pledge in Mi’kmaq, French and English also engaged the large audience.
“The performances put a spotlight on the many different cultures in CCRSB schools, and gave us an opportunity to celebrate all the things that make each of us unique,” said Mr. Adams. “The best part of the rally was that it was student-led and student-focused. We are very proud that so many of our students took part.”
